Matthew 5:14. You were not made to hide; the light in you was given so that others could find their way.
"You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid." (Matthew 5:14, The Fellowship Bible)
The verse
Jesus spoke these words on a mountainside in Galilee, to a crowd of ordinary people: fishermen, farmers, mothers, the poor and the sick. He did not say you will become the light, or you should try to be the light. He said you are.
A city built on a hill is seen from every direction. At night its lamps can be seen for miles, and travellers steer by them. It cannot hide, and it was never meant to.
A word for today
You were not made to hide. The light in you was given so that others could find their way. It does not need to be loud or grand: a kind word, a patient answer, an honest day's work, a hand held out to someone who is struggling. Each of these is a lamp in the window.
Today's practice
Let one small kindness shine today where someone can see it.
Think in light. Speak in truth. Act in love.
